Visit any aged care facility and you’ll find a tall stack of Andre Rieu DVDs in the TV room. This Dutch fiddler has made untold millions with a performance style perfect for those who are being kept alive by onerous drug schedules, intermittently conscious, indifferent to the present and confused about the facts of the past… I read an interview with Rieu which illustrated just what a diabolic genius he is: he boasted of once owning a pizza joint whose most expensive offering was the Pizza Paganini… a regular pizza but with Rieu emerging from the kitchen to serenade the wealthy diner with his fiddle… He personally designs dresses for each member of his orchestra, and insists that the horse-drawn carriage which he rides on stage be painted with real gold paint… I received a strong impression that Rieu is an overwhelming force, the kind of person who in another age would not just have killed his enemies but eaten their hearts to absorb their mana.
